I have had many people call me with a perceived problem or malfunction with a lens or a camera that once we have assesed the problem we have found the solution in changing a user setting to suit the shooting conditions or allow the lens or camera to function.  This has led to a few sheepish people saying they should have known better, and chastising themselves for wasting our time.  To us it is not a problem, the important thing here is they have just learned why they had a problem, we don't humiliate people for making mistakes, we nurture...Because we were in the same position once.  We know it is a learning curve and we know that sometimes everyone needs a little help or advice.

We have competitive pricing on our products, we are not a bargain basement, WE DO NOT MATCH PRICES with Grey Market Importers, they do not have the Australian Warranty Systems in place, they do not have the Professional Backup support and more to the point, some are in it just for a "Fast Buck" they could care less if you are satisfied.  Basically it has to be "Apples for Apples" and I know of some that may have a lemon or two.

Recently I had someone come to me to buy a lens for their kit, he is a Pro Photographer.  He bought a lens from a Grey Importer within Australia, his lens was delivered with a fault (Yes even Canon Pro Lense sometimes have faults).  He contacted the seller of his new lens and advised them that the Lens had a fault.  He was advised by this "Supposed Respectable Grey Importer" to send the lens back to them so they could get the lens fixed for him. 

The customer is confused, surely you could just replace the lens as it was dead on arrival?.  The customer was told that this was not company policy to swap , but they would be more than happy to have the lens looked at by their repairer.  It would returned as soon as the repair was completed...oh...and you will need to pay for the courier charge to get it to us they said. 

Feeling a little put out, the customer asked  "why don't I just take it down the road to North Ryde and get it in for you?...He was told that Canon would not be doing the Repair.  We have our own repairer he was informed.  (By the time the Customer had got to here telling me this I was cringing, the thought of someone without the relevant tools and training touching this lens made me shudder.)

He returned the lens to the seller and instructed them to refund his money, he was told this was not possible and that there was no returns on these products.  Only after threatening the seller with further legal action did they allow the return of the lens and refunded the purchase price.  Consequently the Customer had missed the job that he was wanting to use the lens for, and he was out of pocket $38 for having to pay for returning the lens.

Next Day, after a follow-up call to our New Customer, he reports that the new lens is performing well and he will talk to me after this job.  He needs a little advice on another lens

This is a horror story, I really felt for the customer.  He had been enticed into a "Cheap" deal which could have turned into a very expensive mistake if the fault had occured more than a couple of weeks after purchase and he had not been able by law to return the product.

Another recently...

An Amatuer photographer who has just started shooting Weddings bought a camera off Quality Camera Sales Australia two years ago.  The camera is a year out of Warranty.  Up to this particular day the camera had performed flawlessly,but it was now dead and he had a wedding to shoot in three days.  The Camera was in very good condition but it had a fault showing "error 99"

There was absolutly no way he could get it repaired in three days, so he had called me to buy another Camera Body

I told him that there was no way I was going to sell him another body until his had been inspected by Canon and repaired if possible.  I informed him that we will make a loan camera available to him while his was being serviced.  I asked "Would you prefer the 40D or the 5D?"  He opted to borrow the 5D.

Next morning he had the 5D with the Instruction manual in his hands...(Perth to Sydney in less than 24hrs)

6 weeks later he got his body back, cost him $345 for the repair, I had my 5D body back in my hands a few days later

At the time he probably saved about $1600 on buying a new body, and about $5-600 more on having to Hire a body for the 4 weddings he shot with my Loan Camera

I could go on for hours with referals and examples, but you really don't get to appreciate how well the loan and backup services work until you are the one in need of them.  We all know Canon is a top product, but even with top products you still get faults.  We are always glad to assist our customers to ensure that faults are quickly rectified and the effects of the fault do not affect the customers shooting for longer than necessary.
